Abstract
1395586 Container closures AVM CORP 18 Oct 1972 [18 May 1972] 48051/72 Heading B8T [Also in Division F2] A cap for a petrol tank filler tube has a pressure relief and vacuum relief function. The pressure relief valve comprises a seat 261, of elastomeric material such as Buna-N (Registered Trade Mark), and a closure member 272, of a plastics material such as polycarbonate, having a narrow annular valve surface 276. The closure member is loaded by a spring 282 and is guided by ribs (280) in its central aperture 278 which loosely centre it on a rivet-like fastener 212. The vacuum relief valve comprises the member 272 on which seats a bead 298 surrounding a central aperture in a flexible diaphragm 296 of an elastomeric material such as epichlorohydrin. The diaphragm is backed by a silicon-bronze spring washer 300 which provides a very small bias. The washer is made more flexible by the provision of openings 304 and radial slits 302. The cap comprises an outer protective shroud 202 and an inner cup-like member 206 which fits within the filler tube and is provided with conventional latching tangs 214, 216. The seal between the cap and the top of the filler tube is provided by a resilient generally flat sealing element 232 having inner and outer bead portions 234, 236. The inner bead is held sealingly between the end wall portions of the members 202 and 206. The lower part of the outer bead provides the sealing surface for the filler tube. A plurality of projections 238 engage the end wall of the cap to prevent overstressing. The seal is made of an elastomeric material such as Buna-N (Registered Trade Mark) and is reinforced by a silicon bronze insert 240. This insert, in addition to determining the sectional shape of the sealing element 232, provides additional protection against damage. Torsional damage is prevented by the inner bead 234 of the sealing element slides between the end walls of the . members 202, 206. In another embodiment of the diaphragm valve, Fig. 4 (not shown), a bead (444) surrounding a central aperture in a flexible diaphragm seats on an occluded seat member (432) having radially disposed supporting spokes (438). The diaphragm is backed by a spring washer (450), having apertures (456) and radial slits (452), to give a small bias to the valve member. Damage to the diaphragm from excessive back pressure is prevented by the diaphragm contacting the supporting spokes of the seat member.
