Abstract

1395578 Cutting tools UGINE-CARBONE 12 May 1972 [14 May 1971] 22468/72 Heading B3B A cutting tool comprises a holder 2 for accommodating an insert 1 and means for securing the insert in a recess 11 in the holder which comprises an L-shaped member 10 one arm 19 of which engages in a hole in the insert and the other arm 18 is received in a slot 12 in the holder. A bridge clamp 3 is secured to the holder by a screw 4 which has a conical end which engages in a concave recess 14 in the end of the arm 18 of the L-shaped member. The clamp has a first portion 15 which engages with the top face of the insert and a rear portion 16 which engages a spring device 8, 9 in the holder 2. The tightening of the screw 4 effects the combined clamping action of the bridge clamp and the L- shaped member to retain the insert in the recess 11. Engagement between the conical portion of the screw and member 10 urge the insert laterally and perpendicularly into the recess, the latter being aided by the pressure of the spring device 8, 9 which is proportional to the lever effect of the clamping member about the screw 4. Alternative spring devices are shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
