Abstract
1395503 Sharpening cutters in situ SAUNDERS-REEVE ENG Ltd 27 July 1972 [27 July 1971] 35245/71 Heading B3D A device for sharpening the blades of a cutting cylinder of a lawnmower comprises a grinding wheel 5, a support 2 for rotatably mounting the wheel, and guide means 11 for the support, the guide means having a first portion 12 for sliding co-operation with a fixed portion 14 of the lawnmower which is straight and parallel to the axis of the cutting cylinder and a second portion 15 adapted to be located on the blade 16 to be sharpened, the guide means serving to guide the device in a path parallel to the axis of the cutting cylinder while maintaining the cutting edge of the blade in engagement with the wheel during movement of the device. The support 2 consists of a U-shaped member having a handle 3 at the bight portion thereof and a pair of bearings 4 in the legs for the spindle 6 of the grinding wheel. The guide means consists of a pair of bars 11, each of which is formed with a tongue 18 for sliding engagement in a slot 19 in a respective leg 10 of the support, the tongue being adjustably secured in the slot by a nut 22 on a screw 21 extending through a slot 20 in the tongue. Each guide bar has a first portion 12 formed with a step for sliding engagement with bottom shear blade of the mower, and a second portion formed by a slot 15 for engaging the blade to be sharpened, the slot on one bar being offset from that on the other to accommodate the helical form of the blade. In use, the drive shaft is connected to a power unit, such as an electric drill, and the portions 12 engaged with the bottom shear blade. The slots 15 are engaged with the blade to be sharpened and, with the nuts 22 released, the grinding wheel is lowered into engagement with the blade, such adjustment compensating for wear of both the blade and the wheel. With the power unit started, the device is drawn along the bottom shear blade.
