Abstract

1395420 Temperature responsive actuating elements TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc 25 July 1972 [3 Aug 1971] 34757/72 Heading G1D A thermal actuator which converts electrical energy to mechanical movement comprises a casing 12 open at one end to allow movement therethrough of a piston 24 which is biased to the retracted position (as shown) by a spring 36. A portion of the piston 24 enters a chamber 16 holding a thermally expansible medium 20, an O-ring 84 being provided to sealingly mount a floating head piston 78 in the neck 18 of the chamber 16. Alternatively the portion of the piston entering the chamber may be in direct contact with the medium and itself bear the sealing ring, Fig. 1 (not shown). The medium 20 is heated by means including an element 22 which has a steeply sloped positive temperature coefficient of resistance above an anomaly temperature so as to generate heat which maintains the medium 20 at a predetermined temperature in response to continuous electrical energization. The heating element may comprise a ceramic wafer of semi-conducting barium titanate, the medium 20 may be oil, wax or polyethylene and the casing 12 may be integrally formed of phenolic plastics, or be in two parts (as shown) of aluminium 12a and phenolic plastics 12b. An aperture 38 allows initial calibration, excess medium 20 venting therethrough. A heat radiating element 70 may be employed to effect a more rapid expansion of the medium 20. The actuator may operate a valve or a switch.
