Abstract
1394412 Heart pacemakers SORIN SOC RICERCHE IMPIANTI NUCLEARI SpA 15 May 1973 [25 May 1972] 23074/73 Heading A5R An implantable heart pacemaker is powered in use by received radio-frequency energy and comprises a tuned receiver/rectifier 48, 50, 52 operable to give on an output terminal 44 heart stimulation pulses in response to receiving transmitted radio-frequency energy which is pulse-modulated at a pulse repetition frequency equal to the desired heart stimulation rate, an input terminal 42 for connection to the output of a separate heart pacemaker and a remotely controllable switch operable selectively to make or break a connection between input terminal 42 and output terminal 44. The switch may be a bistable reed switch operable by a magnet external to the patient's body and being held in a first state by mechanical biassing and in the second state by an internal biassing magnet. In a second embodiment negative pulses applied to input terminal 42 by a battery-powered pacer keep transistor 66 conducting to transmit the pulses via d-c blocking capacitor 62 to output terminal 44. When the r.f. signal is received by receiver/rectifier 48, 50, 52 it is also received by receiver/rectifier 72, 74, 76 to give signals via filter 78, 84 to turn on transistor 68 whereby transistor 66 is cut-off preventing the battery-powered pacer pulses from reaching terminal 44 and presenting this pacer with no appreciable load whereby battery energy is conserved.
