Abstract
1394056 Contact lenses NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 18 July 1972 [21 July 1971] 34231/71 Heading G2J [Also in Division C3] Contact lenses comprise a physiologically inert, transparent, oxygen permeable plastics material having a hydrophilic surface and a glass transition temperature between ambient temperature and normal eye temperature. The plastics material may be poly 4-methyl-pentene-1 or a copolymer of 4-methylpentene-1 with 2-methylbutene-1, and may be rendered hydrophilic by coating with silica or titanium dioxide or by compounding with an alkyl titanate, by treating with a strong oxidizing agent, e.g. chromic acid solution, or a sulphanating agent and base, or by copolymerizing with an olefinically unsaturated hydrophilic monomer, e.g. alkenols, glycol acrylates and methacrylates and N-vinyl pyrrolidone. The physical properties of the polymer may be varied by incorporating other monomers, e.g. acenaphthylene.
