Abstract

1393703 Healing bone damage W KRAUS 31 May 1973 [9 March 1973] 25987/73 Heading A5R An apparatus for promoting the healing of bone damage comprises at least two metal electrodes insertable in the bone, an A.C. supply having a flexible wire being connectable to each electrode by means of interlockable connecting elements. In one embodiment, each electrode is a bone screw 12, Fig 4 whose head is formed as a socket 25, preferably hexagonal, widened at the inner end by a recess 26 into which spring elements 24 are lockable, those spring elements being carried on a plastics cap 18, detachably mounted in the head of screw 12. The cap 18 is preferably mushroom-shaped with a shank which fits in the socket of the screw and has grooves for wire-like spring elements 24, a connecting wire 15 being brought out laterally through a protector 22, to connect the screw 12 to a receiving coil (16) Fig 1 (not shown). The cap is made of P.T.F.E. In an alternative embodiment, Fig 5, metal rods 30 are passed through each part 10a and 10b of the broken bone, the rods being pointed at one end to facilitate insertion, and being drawn together after insertion by turnbuckles 32, 33. The rods 30 act as electrodes and are connected via element 34, each by its respective wire 14, to an A.C. source. The parts of the rods 30, where they pass through the soft tissue 36, are insulated by tubes 38 of thin P.T.F.E., and the turnbuckles 32, 33, may be at least partly of insulating material, e.g. glassreinforced plastics. At least one eye 40 of each turnbuckle comprises an O-ring 42, compressed by clamping screw 43 so that it presses firmly against rod 30. The end of rod 30 remote from the point may form a connecting element, having an annular groove 44 into which the balls of connecting element 34 can lock. The receiving coil 16, serving as an A.C. source, may be clamped to non-insulated places or rods 30 by means of U-shaped metal clamps 45, electrically connected to the ends of the winding of the coil 16. The bone screws may be of a Co-Cr-Mo alloy, and the A.C. supply should not exceed 1 volt(s) with a frequency greater than 1Hz, but preferably less than 100Hz, with a wave-form having gradually rising and falling flanks.
