1393675 #-adrenergic blocking medicines IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 May 1972 [16 June 1971] 28205/71 Heading ASB [Also in Division C2] Pharmaceutical compositions, in the form of tablets, capsules, orally-acceptable solutions, suspensions or emulsions, injectable solutions, suspension or emulsions, dispersible powders, sprays or aerosols, contain novel alkanolamines or pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof of the formula: wherein R<SP>1</SP> is C 3-5 alkyl or C 3-5 hydroxyalkyl which are branched at the alphacarbon atom or C 3-5 cycloalkyl; R<SP>2</SP> is C 1-10 alkyl or C 2-6 alkenyl; and R<SP>3</SP> is H, halogen, OH, CN, C 1-6 alkyl, C 1-6 alkoxy, C 1-6 alkylthio, C 2-6 alkenyl, C 2-6 alkonyloxy or C 7-10 aralkyl; provided that when R<SP>3</SP> is H, halogen or C 1-6 alkyl, R<SP>2</SP> is C 2-6 alkenyl, in association with pharmaceutically acceptable diluents or carriers. The compositions may also contain other active ingredients selected from sedatives, for example phonobarbitone, moprobate, chlorpromazine or a benzodiazepine, vasodilators, for example glyceryl trinitrate, pentaerythritol tetranitrate or isosorbide dinitrate, diuretics, for example chlorothiazide, hypotensive agents, for example reserpine, bethanidine or quanethidine, myocardial depressants, for example quinidine, agents used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, for example benzhexol, cardiotonic agents, for example digitalis preparations, or sympathomimetic bronchodilators, for example isoprenaline, orciprenaline, adrenaline or ephedrine. The compounds possess #-adrenergic blocking activity.
