Abstract

1393426 Spot bonded fabric IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 Sept 1973 [27 Sept 1972] 44651/72 Heading D1R A non-woven fabric is obtained by irradiating selected areas of a web with one or more laser beams so as to weld fibres together in discrete areas and then lofting the web. The laser beam preferably forms holes in the web and welds adjacent fibres. Exemplified webs are a continuous filament web of nylon 66 core/nylon 6 sheath, an optionally needle punched web of nylon 66 core,170/30 nylon 66/6 copolymer sheath continuous filaments, a needled continuous filament web of side by side polyethylene terephthalate/polytetramethylene terephthalate, a web of side by side nylon 66/nylon 6 staple fibres, a staple fibre web of nylon 66 core/nylon 6 sheath staple fibres which may be needled, a continuous nylon 6 filament web and a web of continuous side-by-side nylon 66/nylon 11 filaments. The web may be calendered or pre heated before the lazer welding. The laser may be a CO 2 gas laser with a power of 22 watts to over 1 kilowatt. Preferably the laser is stationary and patterning is produced on a moving web by interrupting the beam with a rotating disc provided with slits, the axis of rotation being oscillated by means of a cam. Alternatively the laser beam may be traversed by rotating mirrors. The perforated fabric may be stretched on a stenter to increase the area of the holes and set by heating or calendering using a heated embossing roll to produce further spot welding. The lofting treatment which increases the thickness of the non-welded areas comprises heating in an agitated fluid, heating fibres with a latent crimp to bulk them, heating a web comprising fibres with different shrinkages, or mechanically heating or teasing.
