Abstract

1392987 Unwinding webs SERVICE D'EXPLOITATION INDUSTRIELLE DES TABACS ET DES ALLUMETTES 28 April 1972 [30 April 1971] 19763/72 Heading B8R A device for maintaining continuity of web feed during an unwinding operation includes at least one replacement reel carrying shaft 4 and a means for receiving the leading ends 1 of these reels 3, means for moving the reels successively along the shaft and the ends along the receiving means in synchronism to a standby position, means 9 for accelerating the web at the standby position to the speed of a web from an expiring reel and means for joining these two webs. The replacement reels 3a-3i, Fig. 2, may be located on a fixed drum (201), Fig. 5 (not shown), provided on the shaft 4, and between fingers (209) which can be moved axially of the drum and are retractable into the drum in such a way as to move the reels axially of shaft 4. The corresponding leading ends 1a-1i of the webs 2a-2i on the reels are held by suction through perforations 11 on a fixed drum 7 and are moved in synchronism with the reels by a reciprocable slide 5 towards a suction drum accelerating means 9. When a feeler (119), Fig. 1 (not shown), detects the near expiry of a web 101 from the expiring reel (102), the suction drum 9 is rotated to bring the web 2a, Fig. 8, held thereon to feed speed, a roller 129, mounted on a reciprocable carriage 121, is lowered and the carriage moves leftwards as viewed in Fig. 8, causing a rack 123 and pinion 127 device to rotate a knife 117 and cut the web 2a on the suction drum 9. Subsequently roller 132 drops off a carriage cam 131 and causes a knurling roller 112 to press expiring web 101 against the cut leading edge of web 2a to knurl them together, knife 115, having then rotated further, cutting off the expiring web 101. The carriage then returns and the roller 129 and knife 115 are moved laterally from the path of web 2a to allow the new reel 3a to be moved to the position originally occupied by reel (102) and the web 2a to move to the original position of web 101. The remaining replacement reels 3b-3i are then moved one increment as are their corresponding leading ends 1b-1i. Two knives may be provided.
