Abstract

1392922 Developing silver halide emulsions FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 3 March 1972 [4 March 1971] 49014/74 Divided out of 1392461 Heading G2C A method of improving image sharpness by the 'adjacency effect' comprises developing an imagewise exposed silver halide emulsion layer in the presence of 1) an ethylene oxide polymer comprising a polyethylene glycol or a condensation product of an ethylene oxide with an active hydrogen-containing organic compound, the ethylene oxide chain of the polymer having a molecular weight of at least 300, and 2) a merocyanine dye of Formula:- wherein W is S, Se, O or a 7N-R<SP>3</SP> group, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> each represent H, optionally substituted alkyl or optionally substituted aryl, and Z completes an optionally substituted heterocyclic nucleus comprising a 5- or 6- membered heterocyclic ring which contains the N atom shown. Examples of the polymer include N- methylmyristylamino polyethylene oxide, polyethylene oxide-oleyl ether,-monolaurate,- nonylphenyl ether and -sorbitan monolaurate. The compounds may be contained in an element comprising the emulsion layer, [or] in a developer solution, or in a processing solution used prior to development e.g. a hardening bath.
