Abstract
1392786 Printed circuits INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 8 March 1973 [12 June 1972] 11388/73 Heading H1R [Also in Division H2] A method of forming an armature for an electrical machine from flexible printed circuit cards comprises placing two superimposed cards 50, 52 and 53, 54 on a mandrel 21, the cards having a thermally activated adhesive between them, and being arranged so that free metal tabs from each card are at each end of the mandrel and that the side edges of each card abut to form an axial seam 51, 55, and heating and pressurizing the cards within a pneumaticelectric oven to activate the adhesive. As shown, each card contains two sets of conductors enabling two armatures to be formed simultaneously, the cards being of epoxy fibreglass 52, 53 with photo-etched conductors of copper or aluminium 50, 54. Preferably the abutting edges of the two cards are radially displaced to strengthen the final seamed armature. During heating a copper sleeve 56 may be present to aid heating conformity. The mandrel may have a channel 23 therethrough for passing heating or cooling fluid through the oven. The oven may include a flexible lining which may be pressurized by compressed air to force the cards tightly on to the mandrel. Alternatively the conductors may be formed from the metal layer by stamping, cutting or scribing.
