139,234. Morris & Co., H. N., and Morris, H. N. June 5, 1918. Chloro compounds; nitro compounds; sulphonic acids.-Apparatus for nitrating, sulphonating, or chlorinating aromatic compounds, such as benzene, toluene, or phenol, consists of a series of superimposed reaction chambers A - - A' surmounted by condenser chambers B - - B'; the chambers A, A<2> are provided at C, C<1> with atomizers through which the reacting substances are introduced, and the chambers A<1>, A<3> contain heating or cooling coils d, d<1>. The liquids run down through the perforated floors a, a<2>, a<3>, while vapours rise through outlets D - - D<3> to the condensing-chambers. Pipes E connect the chamber A<1>, the floor of which is not perforated. with chamber A<2>, and also connect with the lowest condenser chamber B. Inert gases may be introduced into the chambers A<2>, A<4> by atomizers C<1>, C<2>. The product of the reaction passes down to the chamber A<4> and is drawn off by the pipe E'. In sulphonating, the aromatic body and sulphuric acid are introduced by the atomizers, while, in chlorinating, the aromatic body and liquid chlorine are introduced similarly. When chlorinating, a catalyst such as iron is used in the chambers A<1>, A<3>. The Provisional Specification refers broadly to introducing the reacting bodies as sprays in sulphonating, nitrating, or chlorinating aromatic bodies.
