Abstract

1392268 Making shackles W M SHWAYDER 15 Oct 1973 47958/73 Heading B3A [Also in Division E2] A saw and impact resistant member comprises an elongated metal core 16 surrounded by a closely fitting thin metal sheath 19 with longitudinally extending shallow grooves formed in the surface of the core, the grooves being filled with a matrix 22 formed of closely packed hard particles of and a softer binder material. The saw and impact resistant member forms a padlock shackle 11. The hard particles may be tungsten carbide and the soft metal binder may be a copper solder. The core and sheath may be made of steel. The shackle is resistant to breakage and has notches for a transverse locking bar 13 within a casing 12. A method of making the saw and impact resistant member comprises forming the elongated metal core with spaced apart longitudinally extending shallow surface grooves, closely fitting the tubular, thin walled sheath over the core, then filling the grooves from one end with a packing formed of the particles of the hard material, heating the binder so that it flows into the grooves to fill the spaces between the particles and solidifying the binder to form the solid motions of the particles and the binder, then swaging the member to elongate it, reduces its cross-sectional dimension and to work harden the metal.
