Abstract

1391661 Electrographic developer OCE-VAN DER GRINTEN NV 19 Jan 1973 [20 Jan 1972] 2855/72 Heading G2H [Also in Division C3] In an electro-photographic process for making copies on paper, a two-component developer powder is used, comprising magnetically attractable carrier particles and a toner. The toner of particle size < 40 Ám comprises by 1-10 wt per cent colouring matter and 99-90% of a mixture of two polyamides (P 1 and P 2 ) each derived from an alkylene diamine and a dimerized unsaturated carboxylic acid, the m.p. of (P 1 ) being 100-125‹C and of (P 2 ) being 175-200‹C, the wt. ratio (P 1 )/ (P 2 ) being from 4 to 3. The colouring matter is preferably a mixture of C black and nigrosine. The toner may have particle size 2-40 Ám. The carrier particles may be of size 40-200 Ám. They may be spherical hollow Fe particles. The developer preferably contains by weight 4-6 parts toner and 96-94 parts carrier, and can be replenished during copying with a 1 : 1 mix of toner and carrier. The process comprises integrally projecting an image of a static original on a negatively-charged photoconductive layer, e.g. containing ZnO coated on a flexible support e.g. paper shaped as a zig zag folded endless belt, continuously moving at # 5 m/min, developing the latent charge image with the developer by the magnetic brush method, transferring the powder image to a receiving paper under the influence of an electric field and fixing the image on the paper e.g. by heating to 125- 150‹C and cleaning the photo-conductive layer after the transfer of the powder image.
