Abstract

1391432 Television UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF NORTH WALES 3 March 1972 [4 March 1971] 6058/71 Heading H4F [Also in Division G1] To measure the area or areas which are visually different from their surroundings a TV camera scans the areas or area to be measured and the resulting video signal is chopped, the resulting D.C. pulses are then passed through a level-adjusting device and a threshold circuit, the pulses from which are counted to give a measure of area and also passed to a TV monitor to give a picture of the areas being measured. The threshold circuit is a non-linear circuit formed from two resistors and a tunnel diode in series giving a non-linear output characteristic which has a first substantially linear portion below the discrimination input level and a second substantially linear portion above the discrimination input level, the output levels of one portion being significantly higher than the output levels of the other portion. An operator by adjusting the D.C. level, relative to the input discrimination level, can select areas for measurement on the basis of their different brightnesses, a picture of the area(s) selected being displayed on the monitor.
