Abstract

1391403 Apparatus for applying a foamed coating E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 4 June 1973 [5 June 1972] 26452/73 Heading D1L An apparatus for preparing and applying a foamed mixture made from a pressurized gas and a coating liquid to a textile web moving in a path comprises (i) an elongated housing arranged in use to be positioned across the path and consisting of walls forming an inner chamber with a longitudinal slot through one wall which slot is in communication with the chamber and in use is disposed towards the path, (ii) means for mixing a supply of coating liquid with a supply of pressurized gas and (iii) a diffusion filter positioned in the chamber for receiving the mixture of coating liquid and gas from the means for mixing. If desired a pair of housings may be arranged on each side of the path to apply the mix to opposite sides of the web. The housing may be a cylinder with a perforated distribution plate fitted in the slot and means may be provided to adjust the length of the slot. The coated web may subsequently be dried. As shown in the figure the applicator assembly is generally designated by 100 and the foam producer by 10. The foam producer includes a pipe 12 extends from a solution supply (not shown) to a metering pump 14 which pumps solution via pipe 16 through a conventional filter 18 which is connected via pipe 20 to one side of a pipe tee 22. In the other leg of this system a pipe 24 extends from a compressor at source (not shown) through a throttle valve 26 and connected needle valve via pipe 28 through check valve 30, pipe 32 to the second side of pipe tee 22. Output from tee 22 passes by pipe 34 to prefoamer assembly 36, pipe 38 to a second prefoamer 40 and thence by pipe 42 to fitting 102 which is connected to applicator cyclinder 104 of the assembly 100, by a filter cartridge 106. The foamed coating is applied to the web from axial slot 108 via perforated distribution plate 112 fitted therein. Figure 4 (not shown) illustrates foam application to both sides of a moving endless tow.
