Abstract
1390865 Crystalline pentaiodides ESB Inc 8 Jan 1973 [7 Jan 1972] 992/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division C2] Crystalline MAg 4 I 5 , where M is K<SP>+</SP>, Rb<SP>+</SP>, Cs<SP>+</SP>, or NH 4 <SP>+</SP> or a combination (Cs<SP>+</SP>, if present, forming only a minor proportion of M), is prepared by forming a saturated solution of MI and AgI, cooling until AgI, crystllizes out, continuing cooling until M 2 AgI 3 starts to crystallize out, separating the solution from the crystals and precipitating MAg 4 I 5 crystals from solution by maintaining the solution under conditions such that solvent evaporates at a rate of up to 10% of its volume every 24 hours. Crystals of MAg 4 I 5 of particle size >1/64 inch are claimed. A seed crystal of MAg 4 I 5 may be immersed in the solution prior to precipitation, the conditions being controlled such as to prevent spontaneous nucleation. The mole ratio of AgI to MI in the saturated solution may be 4 : 1 or more and the temperature at precipitation may be 1‹ C. above the lowest temperature at which MAg 4 I 5 is stable in the solvent. The preferred solvent is hydriodic acid.
