Abstract
1390694 Removal of SO 2 from waste gas; sulphur; hydrogen sulphide FOSTER WHEELER Ltd 9 Aug 1973 [10 Aug 1972] 37746/73 Heading C1A Sulphur dioxide (which may be a constituent of a waste gas stream), is reduced by granular coal in the presence of steam, the coal being oxidized and the sulphur dioxide reduced to sulphur and/or hydrogen sulphide. The coal may contain a high proportion of sulphur. Reaction is preferably carried out at a temperature of at least 800‹ F. As the reaction temperature is increased the proportion of hydrogen sulphide in the product is increased. The process may be carried out by passing the sulphur dioxide or gas containing it and the steam continuously into a reactor vessel through which the granular coal is conveyed, and ash produced being removed to maintain a high rate of oxidation of the coal.
