Abstract

1390331 Power-assisted steering mechanism SOC ANON FRANCAISE DU FERODO 15 May 1973 [15 May 1972] 23122/73 Heading B7H In power-assisted steering mechanism including a control valve with a spool 17 actuated in response to lateral displacement of a pinion 16 interposed between a pinion 15 on a steering column 10 and a rack 12 linked to steerable wheels 14, centering means 24 for applying a thrust to the spool 17 to accelerate return of the mechanism to the straight-ahead position when the driver ceases a steering action comprises an indicator nut 29 which is mounted on a screw coupled to the column 10 by bevel gears 10 so that its position indicates the steering angle and acts through a spring 25 on the spool 17. The spring 25 is interposed between a pair of washers seated between respective thrust shoulders on the indicator nut 29 and a part 32 which is connected by an arm 37 to a part 16a carrying the pinion 16 and linked by a rod 17a to the valve spool 17. The spool 17 is displaceable in a housing against the resistance of a spring 23 weaker than the spring 25 to control distribution of hydraulic fluid from a pump unit 19 to a power cylinder 20 having a piston 21 coupled to the rack 12. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the control valve spool is actuated in response to relative rotation between the steering shaft and a pinion meshing directly with the rack, and the screw 34 is arranged parallel to the steering shaft and driven through spur pinions. The indicator nut and screw may be operatively connected to the rack instead of to the column.
