Abstract

1390011 Cast iron M FELTZ 6 June 1972 [29 June 1971] 26316/72 Heading C7A A wear-resistant ferrous alloy having the composition:-2.3 to 5.0% carbon, 33.0% to 51.0% chromium, 0.15% to 1.5% manganese, 0.15% to 1.5% silicon where 11#%Cr-8x%C#16 is heat treated so as to form an alloy constituted by a martensitic solid solution without ferrite and containing eutectic and hyper-eutectic carbides, but free of secondary carbides and said alloys having a hardness equal to or greater than Rc60 of the Rockwell 'C' scale. The heat treatment involves heating the cast iron and maintaining it at a temperature ranging from 1025‹C to 1150‹C for 1 to 5 hours to form austenite, then cooling the cast iron by blown or still air to form martensite. After martensite formation a stress-relief treatment may be carried out between 100‹C and 300‹C and residual austenite present may be reduced by a tempering heat treatment between 450‹C and 550 C, or cooling to a low temperature which may be down to - 200‹C.
