Abstract

1389565 Inorganic foams LION FAT & OIL CO Ltd 18 Feb 1972 [18 Feb 1971 19 Feb 1971] 2 March 1971] 7740/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] Inorganic formable masses are made by mixing the following components, (a) from 5 to 90% by weight of a composition which comprises silicic acid, silica, clay, surface soil, allophane and or bentonite and which forms a water-soluble silicate upon reaction with an alkali, (b) from 1 to 20% by weight of an alkali comprising potassium hydroxide and/or potassium carbonate, (c) at most 94% by weight of an organic filler comprising sand, blast-furnace slag, cement gypsum and/or calcium sulphite and (d) water to form the water-soluble silicate during mixing. A blowing agent comprising aluminium powder, ferrosilicon, benzene-sulphonyl hydrazide, toluenesulphonyl hydrozide or azodicarbonamide may be included in the mix. The mass may be moulded in a foamed article, e.g. a pipe or sheet, at a temperature of 100-800‹ C. The foamed mass may be crushed into hollow particles or such particles obtained by granulating the foamable composition and subsequently forming the hollow particles by heating at 100-800‹ C. A type of flow diagram is given of a semi-continuous method for making moulded articles. The bulk density of the product can be controlled. The foamed articles may be used as building materials, e.g. as fire and sound-proof walls and ceilings.
