Abstract
1389480 Spinning DALMINE SpA 7 July 1972 [9 July 1971] 31879/72 Heading B3J A forming device for closing one end of a metal tube 3 comprises a chuck 1 for holding the tube, a forming head 4 moveable along the tube axis and drive means for producing relative rotation between the tube and forming head, the forming head having a plurality of idle concave forming rolls 10, 11, 12, mounted thereon for rotation about axes inclined to the axis of the tube so that the concave surfaces of the rolls are brought into contact with different mutually overlapping circular zones of the tube as the forming head moves towards the chuck during the relative rotation. In operation the tube 3 is heated at one end and then rotated by the chuck. The head 4 is advanced by ram 6 towards the heated tube end so that the rolls 10-12 contact the rotating tube and produce a gradual shaping of the tube end into a concave bottom 13. In this embodiment the axes A-B of roll 10, Fig. 3, and C-D of roll 11 lie in a plane passing through the tube axis and through the centre of the arc of contact between the respective roll and tube, and are respectively parallel to the tangent lines E-F and G-H. In another embodiment the axes of each roll may form an angle of up to 20 degrees with its respective tangent line. In another embodiment the axes of each roll form an angle of up to 30 degrees with the plane passing through the tube axis and through the centre of the arc of contact between the roll and tube. In a further embodiment the chuck is non- rotatable and the head 4 is rotatable.
