Abstract
1389404 Making welding rods; welding by fusion TELCON METALS Ltd 16 June 1972 [17 June 1971] 28394/71 Headings B3A and B3R A welding alloy in rod, wire or strip form has a core of alloy which is ductile when hot and which comprises a base metal which is copper, a secondary alloying constituent which is tin and one or more minor additives to promote the required welding characteristics, a balance of tin to obtain a desired composition of the welding alloy being applied as a surface coating on the core. The welding alloy is made by forming an alloy of copper, tin and one or more minor additives into a rod or wire by a hot working and drawing operation and then coating the surface of the rod or wire with tin. In the embodiment described the alloy comprises 0À5-8À0% tin, 0À01-0À3% phosphorus, 0À1- 1À0% silicon and the remainder being copper. The total tin content after coating may be from 1À0-15À0%. The core is cleaned by passing the core through a degreasing tank and a zinc chloride flux bath and then coated by hot dipping, electroplating or vapour deposition.
