Abstract

1389218 Tool for forming internal threads RICHARD LLOYD Ltd 16 June 1972 [3 June 1971] 18709/71 Heading B3N A tool for forming internal threads comprises a stem 12, a main thread forming part 13 and a terminal tapered part 14, part 13 has a plurality of rows of thread portions 15 separated by generally flattish sides 16 so that part 13 is of generally polygonal cross-sectional form with the thread prtions defining rounded corners, and wherein the sides 16 at least intersect the effective thread circle of the main thread forming part 13. Preferably the sides are flat and intersect or cut the core circle 13a and the outer edges 15a extend through an arc of between 5 and 20 degrees. The tool forms a thread in a hole having a diameter approximately equal to the diameter of the effective circle of part 13 by metal displacement. Forming of the tool is by a two-step grinding operation, one step being helical grinding to produce the thread form, the other step being linear grinding to produce the sides.
