Abstract
1389098 Making and restoring rails; welding by fusion ELEKTRO-THERMIT GmbH 14 Dec 1972 [14 Dec 1971] 57828/72 Headings B3A B3R and B3V At least one wear-resistant surface is provided on a rail by forming a recess therein, filling the recess by welding with a rod or strip and machining the filling material, the rod or strip having the following composition, percentages by weight:- C 0À45-0À65%; Si 0À30-0À50%; Ni 3À0-4À0%; Mn 13À0-16À0%; remainder Fe and manufacturing impurities. The method is applied in a workshop to worn or new rails. The surface is formed on the running surface and/or the side-guide surface and/or the tread, a recess in the running or side-guide surface being, in cross-section, 10-34 mm. long by 3-10 mm. deep, while that or those in the tread extend longitudinally of the rail and are 3-9 mm. deep by 10-30 mm. wide. The grooves are formed by milling, grinding, planing or by arc-generating torch, and the filling material is preferably deposited on the cold rail by submergedarc welding. Distortion of the rail may be restricted by counter-heating during or after welding, the profile being restored by grinding.
