Abstract

1388794 Metal sulphates INTERNATIONAL NICKEL CO OF CANADA Ltd 3 July 1973 [5 July 1972] 31601/73 Heading C1A In a process in which a material that contains at least one base metal value that forms a water soluble sulphate is sulphated by reaction with concentrated sulphuric acid, a slurry of the finely divided material with concentrated sulphuric acid (i.e. containing at least 60% by weight of H 2 SO 4 ), is heated to 140‹ to 250‹ C. by the passage of an electric current between insoluble electrodes immersed in the slurry and the base metal sulphate is recovered by leaching the sulphated slurry with water. The material treated may be an anode slime from the electro-refining of nickel sulphide anodes containing precious metals. The base metal may be Ni, Co, Cu, Fe or zinc and Ag, Au, Pt, Pd, Os, Ru, Rh and Ir may also be present. The precious metals are recovered from the enriched back residue, which also contains liberated sulphur.
