Abstract

1388417 Substituted phenalenones IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 Feb 1973 [28 Feb 1972] 9037/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C4] Dyestuff intermediates of the formula (wherein X is OH or Cl and the A, B and D rings may be further substituted) are prepared (a) for the 9-hydroxy compounds, by reacting appropriate 1 - acetyl - 2 - methoxy - naphthalenes with ethyl esters of appropriate carboxylic acids in the presence of sodium ethoxide followed by cyclization of the initial products using H 2 SO 4 ; and (b) for the 9-chloro compounds, by diazotizing the corresponding 9- amino compounds and treating the diazo compounds with cuprous chloride in hydrochloric acid. Specified naphthalene reactants include 1-acetyl-2-methoxy-naphthalene and its 6- methyl, 7 - chloro-, 6 - nitro, 3 - carboxy and 6- and 7-sulpho derivatives; specified ethyl esters are those of acetic, formic and benzoic acids; and specified 9-amino-phenalenones are those containing a 4-sulpho and an 8-carboxy group. 5 - Sulphamoyl - 9 - hydroxyphenalenone and 8 - (N - methylcarbamoyl) - 9 - hydroxyphenalenone are prepared from the corresponding acid chlorides and ammonia or methylamine.
