Abstract
1388281 Continuous casting CONCAST AG 24 Feb 1972 [25 Feb 1971] 8707/72 Heading B3F A rigid or, as shown, an articulated starter bar 16 is introduced into a mould 1 through the mould inlet, after at least one of each pair of opposed walls is moved away normally from the mould axis 21, and is kept at a distance from the mould wall by a guide 6 which is removed when the bar head is in position and before the walls is or are returned into casting position. The bar 16 is conveyed in a support 26 on a carriage 27. The guide 6 may be slidably attached to the bar end so that they enter together. It may be in separate parts, one attached temporarily on each mould wall by pins 7. A support 8 may be located on the guide 6 to prevent bar deflection. The tail end 18 of a preceding casting may be being withdrawn by rollers 12 (adjustable to different dimensions of a bar) when the bar introduction is begun. As in Specification 1,386,633 seal (19) for stopping the gap between the bar head and mould walls may be located before the walls are returned to position and may be introduced on the head. It is compressed by the returning walls larger heads (17) for larger cross-sections of casting may be exchanged for that on the bar 16 in which case the bar guide 6 is split and the parts move with mould walls during casting as they are adjusted to the different cross-sections. A guide 6 in an arcuate mould of which only one side wall is fixed and at least one end wall is movable may have a straight bore inclined to the tangent to the axis of the mould cavity at the mould centre. A bar guide (6) may be attached to a fixed side wall of a straight mould to co-operate with one side only of a rigid bar, there being means (13) above the mould for pressing the bar against the guide, and guide and withdrawal elements (11, 12) below the mould at the side opposite the guide which are outwardly displaceable to accommodate the displacement of the bar by the guide.
