Abstract

1388218 Antiskid braking systems GENERAL MOTORS CORP 13 Sept 1973 [30 Oct 1972] 42988/73 Heading F2F A vehicle anti-lock brake system comprises a governor driven at the speed of a braked wheel and providing fluid at a pressure proportional to wheel speed and at a flow rate proportional to wheel acceleration or deceleration, an accumulator 80; a valve 160 arranged during wheel acceleration to supply fluid at a pressure proportional to wheel speed to charge the accumulator, an orifice 128 arranged during deceleration of the braked wheel to discharge pressure fluid from the accumulator 80 to the governor at a flow rate limited to a predetermined maximum value by the flow threshold of the orifice so that during wheel deceleration at a rate exceeding that corresponding to the maximum value a differential is established between wheel speed pressure and accumulator pressure, and means responsive thereto in the form of a valve 100 to selectively release and re-apply braking pressure. The governor is constructed to provide flow in one direction during acceleration and in the opposite direction during deceleration and the flow orifice 128 restricts the flow to a rate not exceeding a predetermined value corresponding to the maximum deceleration without wheel lock-up so that deceleration in excess of this value causes a pressure difference across the orifice to operate the control valve.
