Abstract

1386864 Ophthalmic compositions AVICON Inc 11 Feb 1972 6586/72 Heading A5B Aqueous pharmaceutical compositions for topical application to the eye having enhanced drug action and/or prolonged duration of drug action comprise a pharmacologically active ophthalmic agent and 0.1 to 5.0% by weight of microcrystalline collagen, based on the composition. The ophthalmic agent may be chloramphenicol, carbomycin, polymyxin, erythromycin, dihydrostreptomycin, neomycin, aureomycin, terramycin, bacitracin, penicillin, ampicillin, atropine, homatropine, scopolamine, cyclopentalate, tropicamide, oxyphenonium, tetracaine, proparacaine, benoxinate, cocaine, procaine, lidocaine, epinephrine, isoniazid, nitrofurans, sulphonamides such as sulphanilamide, sulphapyridine, sulphadiazine, sulphathiazole, sulphaceamide, phenylephrine, ephedrine, gentian violet, acriflarine, silver nitrate, acetylcholine, carbachol, pilocarpine, eserine, echothiophate, demercarium, dihydroergocornine, tolazoline, zinc sulphate, chloro butanol, phenyl butazone, tetraethylammonium chloride, hexamethonium, norepinephrine, physostigmine, cortisone, hydrocortisone, prednisolone, dexamethasone, triamicinolone, methyl prednisilone, argyrol, phenylmercuric nitrate, chlorazene, mercurichrome, iodine or a quaternary ammonium germicide or mixtures thereof.
