Abstract
1386288 Silencers for pneumatic tools S WILMAN 3 July 1972 [5 July 1971] 30965/72 Heading B4C [Also in Division F1] A silencer for the exhaust of a pneumatic drill or the like comprises an outer casing 2, 3 which is adapted to surround the tool body 1 and has its internal cavity divided into a plurality of chambers 13, 13<SP>1</SP>, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18. Resonators are formed by the chambers 13, 13<SP>1</SP> connected to the chamber 14, adapted to receive exhaust air from the body orifice 20, by a tube 52 and openings 53, 54, respectively. At least one pair of successive chambers 14, 15 and 16, 17 through which the air flows in opposite directions are connected by a series of orifices (21 to 28), Fig. 3 (not shown), and (32 to 38), Fig. 5 (not shown), of increasing cross-sectional area in the direction of air flow in the upstream chamber to provide interference of the sound waves in the pair of chambers. The resonator 13 is tuned to the predominant frequency in the range from 0 to 1600 Hz. The reversal of air flow direction in successive chambers is effected by a partition 29 extending through the chambers and the provision, adjacent the partition, of outlet orifices (30, 30, 41, 42), Figs. 4 and 6 (not shown), from the downstream chamber of each pair. The air escapes from the casing 2, 3 through orifices 46, 47, 48 (43, 44, 45), Fig. 7 (not shown), which increase in cross-sectional area in the direction of air flow in the chamber 18 and produce sound wave interference. The casing may have two partitions 29 which define two series of successive communicating chambers adapted to receive exhaust air from at least two orifices in the body 1. A cylindrical sleeve of sheet metal may be fixed to the partitions 9 ... 12 to surround the body 1 and define therewith a resonance chamber or a path for air from chambers between the partitions. The casing 2, 3 may be formed of light alloy or rubber and may be of cylindrical, egg or vase shape or formed of two frusto-cones joined at their bases. The casing may be elliptical in cross-section.
