Abstract
1386279 Matrix displays ING C OLIVETTI & C SpA 10 Aug 1972 [11 Aug 1971 13 Sept 1971 24 Nov 1971 1 Dec 1971 8 Dec 1971] 37431/72 Heading G5C Display apparatus comprises a liquid crystal display panel 11 including a plurality of electrode arrays 13 with corresponding electrodes connected and a common electrode adjacent each array, and a driving circuit comprising means for sequentially applying a reference potential to successive common electrodes and an A.C. erasing potential to the remaining common electrodes and means for applying synchronized actuating potentials to selected groups of array electrodes. Actuating potentials are produced by data from a source 23 applied to a binary decoder 31 via a series to parallel converter 24 and buffer 29. The reference and erasing potentials are applied by a shift register 33 which sequentially grounds one common electrode and leaves the remainder in open circuit and connected to the oscillator 35 applying the erasing potential. A bias voltage 41 is applied to all the electrode arrays to prevent spurious activation. The panel comprises a continuous layer of liquid crystal material and a plurality of figure-of-eight arrays.
