Abstract

1385792 Testing cigarettes MOLINS Ltd 21 Jan 1972 [26 Jan 1971] 2898/72 Heading A2C [Also in Division H4] The firmness or texture of the end portion of a cigarette is tested by directing a gas stream towards the end portion, so as to generate a characteristic sound or gas pressure change, and detecting with a microphone such sound or pressure change. In the Fig. 2 embodiment, cigarettes C held by suction on a rotating fluted drum 3 are carried in turn past a testing station 6 at which air from a nozzle is directed at the cigarette end face. Any sound produced, indicative of a soft end or missing filter tip, enters a tube coaxial with the nozzle and impinges on a microphone supported in station 6 by an antivibration mount. The microphone output is amplified, full-wave rectified and compared with an adjustable threshold value. If this value is exceeded a solenoid air-valve 21 is actuated directly, or via a delay, for ejecting the cigarette. In various modifications both ends of the cigarette may be tested simultaneously by duplicating at least part of the station 6, and the air stream may be directed obliquely against the side of the cigarette end portion so as to deform a deflective end portion.
