Abstract
1385675 Sight testing P M GARTON 11 April 1972 [15 Jan 1971] 2022/71 Heading G2J Visual acuity is tested using an apparatus for presenting a moving pattern comprising means for presenting towards a viewing station a display surface bearing a pattern which consists of pattern elements e.g. stripes 20, repeated along one dimension of the display surface, the display surface being presented, in use, over a field of view of sufficient width to include a plurality of pattern elements, means for moving the display surface across the field of view, and means for varying either or both of the line interval required for passage of the leading and trailing boundaries past a reference point, or the angular width subtended at the viewing station by pattern elements presented at any given instant by the display surface, these last means permitting of determination of the value of the parameter involved. By direct observation of the subject's eyes, or using an EEG, the tester can determine the value of the parameters when opto-kinetic nystagmus occurs, and this gives a measure of visual acuity. The display surface may be a web fed from one roll to another, or be an endless band, as shown, arranged around reels 12, 13. The time variation may be achieved by altering the speed of a motor driving the band. The pattern elements may be of different widths in different transverse parts of the band, when by using a mask to define the field of view, the angular width may be varied.
