Abstract

1384642 Removing oil from water surface E L BRILL and B M BRILL 1 May 1972 [7 May 1971] 20195/72 Heading B1D An apparatus for collecting hydrophobic material from.a layer floating 12 (Fig. 1) on a liquid reservoir 10, i.e. oil from water, comprises a single endless loop 16 of an elongated flexible generally cylindrical collector formed of a material, e.g. rubber or polyurethane having attracting for the hydrophobic material. The loop is passed beneath the floating layer 12 and then upwardly through it to collect the material onto its surface. The collector loop is driven by a first wheel 17 having teeth 21a, 21b which grip the loop 16 and pull it upwardly out of the liquid over a second wheel 15 which does not grip the collector loop. The peripheral speed of the second wheel is preferably greater than that of the first wheel so that the loop slips on its surface, collected material is scraped off the loop by scraper 18 comprising a lower block 18a having a dished channel therethrough to scrape the bottom of the loop and a leather strap 25a with a hanging weight 27 to scrape the upper part of the loop. A further scraper 28 is provided to remove any hydrophobic material which is deposited from the loop onto wheel 15. Rollers 30 are provided to hold the loop on the first wheel. In Figure 6 is shown an apparatus in which the first and second wheels are on a common axis, and the second wheel is formed as a smooth cylindrical extension joined onto the toothed first wheel. In this case the loop passes upwardly around the majority of the periphery of the second wheel before being diverted onto the teeth of the first wheel. The second wheel 1 is of greater diameter than the first wheel to provide the greater peripheral speed. Three scrapers 33, 34, 35 are provided to scrape that part of the loop between the second and first wheels, each scraping a different portion of the loop surface (Figs. 8-10 not shown) and the second of which 34 acts to direct the loop from the second wheel to the first wheel.
