Abstract

1384537 Coated wound covering STERLING-WINTHROP GROUP Ltd 22 May 1972 [20 May 1971] 16149/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division A5] A wound covering capable of adhering to moistened mucosal or skin surfaces includes a film comprising a water-soluble (including colloid-forming) film-forming material and, on one face of the film, a water-insoluble metal salt of the film-forming material. The watersoluble material may be of sodium carboxymethylcellulose or alginate while the water-insoluble material may be of the corresponding alkaline earth metal compounds. The film may be supported on a fabric or plastics sheet but is preferably used unsupported and may contain humectants or plasticisers (glycerol or sonbitol), flavours, essences, dyes, pigments (TiO 2 or ZnO), or medicaments such as lignocaine, cetylpyridinium chloride, penicillin or allantoin. To form the water-insoluble coating, a solution of an alkaline earth metal salt, particularly calcium chloride, may be applied by brush or roller to a surface of the partially dried film to react with the water-soluble material and produce an insoluble salt layer. The film may be formed by cutting into slices a rod formed by extrusion of a paste or by applying a solution as drops to a surface and rolling flat.
