Abstract

1384439 Froth flotation CALGON CORP 27 Nov 1972 [3 Dec 1971] 54797/72 Heading B2H A potash froth flotation process comprises grinding a potash ore, mixing the ground ore with an aqueous solution of a salt, e.g. saturated brine solution, to form a pulp, adding to the pulp a collecting agent, a frothing agent and a slime depressant consisting of a watersoluble diallyl dialkyl quaternary ammonium polymer having a molecular weight of at least 1,000, aerating the pulp to form a froth, collecting the froth and recovering potash values, e.g. sylvite, therefrom. The polymer concentration may be between 0.001 and 1.0 pound per ton of dry ore. In a multi-step process the polymer may be added at the conditioning stages prior to any of the flotation steps. The polymer may be one of dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride. An amine may be used as collector and methoxy propylene glycol and methyl isobutyl carbinol as frothing agents. A flow diagram of a three-step flotation process and results of camparative tests are given.
