Abstract

1383494 Thermosetting aqueous adhesives CRODA INTERNATIONAL Ltd 10 Feb 1972 [12 Feb 1971 (2)] 4576/71 and 4577/71 Heading C3P A thermosetting aqueous adhesive composition comprises (a) an aqueous emulsion of a copolymer of vinyl acetate and a compound of formula wherein R 1 is hydrogen or a lower alkyl group and R 2 is a divalent bridging group, and (b) a curing catalyst which is an acid or an acid reacting metal compound of a metal from Groups IV to VIII of the Mendeleef Periodic Table. Examples of monomers of said formula are hydroxypropyl acrylate and methacrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate and methacrylate and N-methylol acrylamide. Examples of catalyst (b) are molybdic acid, o-phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid, hydrobromic acid, hydroiodic acid, sulphuric acid, sulphamic acid and p-toluene sulphonic acid, and also titanic chloride, titanous chloride, zirconium oxychloride, zirconium sulphate, vanadium pentoxide and ferric chloride. The monomer of the said formula may be used in an amount of from 0À5-15 wt. per cent based on the weight of the emulsion. A third monomer such as ethylene or a compound of general formula CH 2 = CH.COOR wherein R is a hydrocarbon group, may also be present. China clay or sodium chloride may also be present, the china clay being used in an amount of from 8-40 wt. per cent based on the emulsion. The adhesive is cured by heating, preferably by radio frequency heating. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,204,818.
