Abstract
1383491 Toothed gearing; ratchet clutches BENDIX CORP 9 April 1973 [27 April 1972] 16952/73 Headings F2C and F2Q A pinion 26, for connecting the starter motor shaft 12 to a gear 22 drivingly connected to an internal combustion engine, has its teeth 82 projecting axially beyond one end 80 of the rest of the pinion, e.g. so that the end faces of the teeth lie on a cone diverging away from the pinion to facilitate engagement with the gear 22 (e.g. to make d = 170). A ratchet clutch may be included in the starter drive and comprise engageable teeth 34, 36 on axially slidable clutch members 20, 30, the member 20 being mounted on helical splines 18 and being spring 50 biased into engagement. The member 30 is fixed to the pinion 26 and has radially slidable on pins 64 flyweights 58 with inclined faces 60. These coact with a conical face 56 on a ring 54 so that if the engine is running and driving the pinion 26, the masses move radially outwardly and oppose the spring 50. separating the teeth 34, 36 thereby reducing wear.
