Abstract

1383361 Chairs; armrests; upholstery STEELCASE Inc 2 Feb 1972 4850/72 Headings A4H A4J and A4M A chair comprises a load bearing structural shell 10 preferably of polystyrene, a trim shell 20 preferably of polypropylene covering the rear and undersurface of the structural shell 10 and upholstery 40 covering the front and upper surface of the structural shell 10. The structural shell 10 which is provided with reinforcing ribs 11, 13 and recesses 16 in which arms 30 of the chair are engaged, is connected to a floor stand 50 by screws 52 passing through holes in the trim shell and engaging with nuts 12 on the undersurface of the structural shell, air-vents 14 may be provided on the undersurface of the structural shell. The trim shell which is provided around its periphery with a decorative channel strip 24 of PVC is connected to the structural shell by the engagement of clips 17 bolted to the structural shell in clip wells 21 formed integrally with the trim shell. Air-vents aligned with those on the structural shell may be provided on the trim shell. The upholstery comprises a laminated seat cushion 41 adhered to the structural shell and comprising two layers of polyurethane foam, the upper layer of which is softer than the lower layer, a back cushion 4 adhered to the structural shell and comprising two portions 42, 43, the upper portion 43 being softer than the lower portion and a continuous layer of padding 44 and covering 45 secured to the rear and undersurface of the structural shell 20 by staples. The upholstery may be tufted at 46 by sewing threads passing through holes in the structural shell. The arms (30) Fig. 5 (not shown) which are secured to the structural shell each comprise a steel rod (31) over which a trim portion (33) preferably of compression moulded matt finish phenolic plastics is secured.
