Abstract

1383320 Measuring shape photo-electrically BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 18 Aug 1972 [19 Aug 1971] 39069/71 Heading G1A The "shape" of a strip (i.e. the variation across the width of the strip of the distance measured along the surface of the strip parallel to its length between parallel transverse lines) is determined by comparing the displacements of the positions of a plurality of light beams reflected from the strip between two instants of time. Five measuring systems are utilized to monitor separate points across the width of a strip of material passing over a roller. Each system comprises a lens (11) focusing on to the strip an image of a slit (8) extending parallel to the length of the strip and illuminated by a lamp (7). The light reflected from the strip is focused by lenses (13 and 14) on to a linear integrated array (10) of 50 photo-diodes. Vertical movement of the strip causes a related displacement of the point of illumination of the photo-diode array. The array 10 is scanned by means of an oscillator 15 which also operates a gate 17 via a divider 16 to provide an output of single complete scans at spaced intervals of time. The output is stored in a first shift register 18 having a length equal to the number of diodes in the array 10, (i.e. 50). The next output scan is similarly stored in register 18 the previous scan being moved into a second shift register 19. As the third output scan is made the previous two scans are compared bit by bit by means of an exclusive OR gate 20. If the two scans are identical no output is produced but if not the exclusive OR gate 20 produces two pulses spaced by a time proportional to the displacement of the light beam incident on the photo-diode array. This time interval is measured by utilizing the two pulses to open and close a gate 22 and counting the pulses from an oscillator 21 during this interval by means of a diode pump 23 connected to a display 23. The readings corresponding to the five measuring systems may be displayed together to give an indication of the "shape" of the strip and the corresponding signals can be compared to produce a signal to control a rolling mill at the output of which the measuring system is located.
