Abstract

1383174 Radio signalling: repeaters INTERNATIONAL MICROWAVE CORP 21 Dec 1971 59477/71 Heading H4L An r.f. repeater consists of an input bandpass filter 22 and a negative resistance amplifier 24, a frequency changer 28 followed by another bandpass filter 34 at the new frequency, and a chain of at least three tunnel diode amplifiers 24-1 to 24-4 driving a power amplifier 20. The tunnel diode amplifiers each has an associated circulator which, in the event of failure of an amplifier, passes the signal on to the next amplifier. The power amplifier is a travelling wave tube; or it may consist of one or two frequency lock oscillators which lock on to the signal to be amplified and transmitted by the antenna 12; alternatively Gunn or avalanche devices may be used. The frequency changer 28 is also a tunnel diode and receives the output of a local oscillator 30 at frequency f 2 , the shift of received signal frequency f 1 being f 2 or 2f 2 . The oscillator output may be phase modulated by a signal at 32 to insert an alarm or special order signal into the transmitted signal.
