Abstract
1382583 Moulding apparatus GKN SANKEY Ltd 4 April 1972 [16 April 1971] 9672/71 Heading B5A Apparatus for moulding thermoplastic material about a rigid reinforcing core 35 comprises projections 27 mounted on one or more of two mould parts 16, 20 means for moving the projections between positions for supporting the core and retracted inoperative positions, means to abstract heat from the cavity by transfer through the walls thereof, and means to control the transfer of heat along the projections 27 such that heat is abstracted at a rate less than that through the walls or is transferred into the cavity. The object of the invention is to prevent premature hardening of material adjacent the projections and thus ensure complete filling of the spaces left when the projections are withdrawn. Moulding is preferably effected by injection. As shown, the mould parts 16, 20 having cooling water passages 16a, 20a. The projections 27 are secured to sliders 29 which are movable horizontally to retract and project the projections. Each slider has an inclined bore 30 which slidably receives a pin 31 secured to a block 32 which is movable vertically by an hydraulic jack 13. In Fig. 3, the core 35 is an I-shaped beam, e.g. for a window frame, and each projection 27 has a tip 41 of material of poor heat conductivity e.g. sintered aluminium oxide. In Fig. 6 (not shown), each projection (48) carries a ceramic sleeve (53) held by a headed stud (52) received in a threaded bore in the projection. In Fig. 7 (not shown), the projections (59) are of metal and are received in ceramic bushes (60) mounted in the walls of the mould cavity. In Fig. 8 (not shown), the projections (66) comprise hollow metal cylinders (67) with closed ends (68) and a ceramic core (69). In Fig. 9 (not shown), each projection (74) is slidable in a bush (75) of thermally insulating material mounted in the mould wall, and contains an electric heating element (76). Fig. 10 (not shown), shows a modification wherein the projections (83) are heated by hot oil or other liquid supplied thereto by a feed pipe (85). An ejector pin 24 (Fig. 1), is used to locate the core 35 initially and is withdrawn before moulding commences.
