Abstract

1381937 Yarns IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 June 1973 [27 June 1972] 30050/72 Headings D1F and D1W "Twistless" yarn which imparts a random marl appearance to fabrics and carpets made therefrom is produced by intermingling the filaments of each of at least two differently coloured or dyeable, optionally crimped, multifilament components, then entangling the components with one another and collecting the resultant composite yarn. An exemplary yarn having less than 0.1 turns per inch twist and which may combine three multifilament yarns of similar construction but of different dyeability and of similar or different materials e.g. polyamide or polyethylene terephthalate, possesses properties expressed inter alia as minimum values of "coherency factor" and "separation force" as measured according to described detailed tests therefor. Intermingling and entangling may be effected by fluid jet apparatus. As shown, spun multifilament yarns I and 3 of different dyeability withdrawn from packages 5, 7, by feed roll assembly 11, 13 (having been united at guide 9) pass over a drawing pin 15 to a draw roll assembly 17, 19, then are fed by nip rolls 21, 23, through a stuffer-box crimper 25, the crimp being set in chamber 27. Crimped yarns pass via a roll 29 and tensioner 30, splitter guide 31 to an intermingling air jet 33. The intermingled yarns pass through another splitter guide 37 unite at guide 39 and entangle in air jet 41 to form composite yarn which is wound into a package 47.
