Abstract
1381728 Chemical contact apparatus; digesters J THILLAIMUTHU 27 Sept 1972 [1 Oct 1971] 45918/71 Headings BIF and B1X [Also in Division D2] Apparatus for digesting raw cellulosic materials with an aqueous ammoniacal solution to form pulp and for recovering aqueous ammonia for reuse comprises a digester 1 provided with a steam jacket 2 and stirrer 17, an inlet 5, 6 for supply of raw cellulosic material, inlets 8 12 for supply of water and aqueous ammonia respectively, and inlet 20 for supply of an inert gas, a pipe 14 for removal of ammonia gas on distillation, a condenser 15, ammonia storage vessel 10, and outlets 7, 9 for pulp and liquor respectively. In use, raw cellulosic material may be fed through inlet 5, 6 into the digester, and digested therein with aqueous ammonia under pressure and at an elevated temperature. The aqueous ammonia may be supplied via line 10 from storage vessel 10 by means of pump in water in tank 10. The spent liquors may be released, the residual heat being used to evaporate off ammonia. An anti-foam tower 19 which may contain perforated plates or wire grids may be located between the digester and condenser. Ammonia gas may be withdrawn with the aid of vacuum pump 16, or an ejector (see Fig. 2, not shown), and absorbed in water in tank 10. The spent liquors may be drained via outlet 9 for recovery of chemicals or disposal, and the residual contents of the digester may be blown into pit 18 to be drained prior to pulp beating and washing. The ammonia recovery apparatus may be separate from the digester, rather than combined therewith as shown.
