1380978 Abrasive tools J F HARPER 8 Nov 1972 [12 Nov 1971] 51479/72 Heading B3D A buffing wheel comprises a shaft 11 journalled in a buff head and having a plurality of external longitudinal ribs 33, a plurality of buff sections 27 each having an internal rim slidable on the shaft over the ribs, spacers 31 disposed between and separating the rims 27 of the buff sections 29, each spacer having spaced side surfaces 41, 43 engaging adjacent side surfaces of the rims, internal lugs 47 on the spacers keying on the ribs, and tightening means on the shaft for pressing the spacers and sections into frictional engagement with each other. The shaft 11 is hollow and at one end is supported in a frame 19 by a bearing 17 and carries a pulley 21. The other end of the shaft is supported in a bearing 23 of smaller diameter than the shaft and held in quick-release jaws 19a to permit removal and replacement of the rims and spacers. The outer surfaces 35 of the ribs 33 are curved to receive the inner peripheries of the rims and spacers. The spacers have side surfaces 41, 43 engaging the sides of the rims 27, which have U-shaped cross-section jaws 28 formed with teeth 30 for gripping the buffing fabric, and internal lugs 47 having adjacent sides 49 engaging the ribs 33. Each lug has a slot 51 on one side of the spacer 31 for engaging a tongue 53 on the other side of an adjacent spacer for keying the spacers together, and a portion (55, Fig. 5, not shown) of each lug projects from the surface 41 to provide a seating 57 for the rim 27 of the buff section. The lugs also have projecting knobs 59 which can be engaged by elastic bands 61a during preassembly of the spacers and sections prior to being fitted on the shaft. When the assembly is slid on the shaft it is clamped thereto by a locking ring 61 having projecting bayonet fingers 63 engaged by the heads 65 of clamping bolts 67 secured to a spider 69 which is prevented from rotating by arms 71 engaging slots 73 in the shaft and which is axially movable by rotation of a screw-threaded shaft 75 engaged with the spider. Air, liquid coolant and abrasive compound may be supplied to the buffing fabric from a pipe 83 which is connected to the interior of the shaft and to passages 87 in the side walls of the spacers.
