Abstract

1379923 Uses of luminescence and thermoluminescence DE BEERS CONSOLIDATED MINES Ltd 10 Feb 1972 [12 Feb 1971] 6295/72 Heading C4S [Also in Division G1] Particles, e.g. diamonds, are separated from gangue after having been identified by their property of thermoluminescing after irradiation by electromagnetic radiation and subsequent heating. In the method described, the ore mixture is subjected to γ-rays, e.g. from a Co<SP>60</SP> source, which causes luminescence. After irradiation, and subsiding of the luminescence, the mixture is heated, when the diamonds only will thermoluminesce and can be sorted out. If more than one type are present, their thermoluminescence may be analysed spectroscopically and they may be divided according to the method of Application 6296/72. The thermoluminescent light emitted also differs from other luminescent materials present such as zircon.
