Abstract
1379853 Modifying linear polyethylene SNAM PROGETTI SpA 16 Feb 1972 [17 Feb 1971] 7270/72 Heading C3P The swelling on extrusion and melt strength of linear polyethylene are improved by reacting at elevated temperature with 0À05 to 10 weight per cent based on the polyethylene of at least one peroxide while subjecting the reactants to an effective mechanical degradation for a time sufficient to ensure that the resulting branched polyethylene has a molecular weight of the same order of magnitude as that of the linear polyethylene starting material. The polyethylene may be blended with the peroxide in a mixer at 145‹ to 300‹ C. In examples the polyethylenes are reacted with 1,3-di-(t.-butylperoxyisopropyl) benzene or dicumyl peroxide.
