Abstract

1379605 Image generation and recording OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 20 Dec 1971 [23 Dec 1970] 58962/71 Heading H4F [Also in Division G2] A gas discharge panel, of the type comprising a gaseous medium between a pair of dielectric sheets backed respectively by X and Y addressing grids of parallel electrodes to define a matrix of selectively operable light emitting elements, is operated to provide a selected optical image which may be in the visible region and which is recorded on a photo-sensitive surface. As particularly described, the photo-sensitive surface may be that of a material exhibiting persistent internal polarization, e.g. zinc and/or cadmium chalcogerides, anthracene, chrysene, alkaline earth halides or a sulphur-tellurium mixture, whereby with a simultaneously applied electric field the image is stored as an electrostatic pattern. Alternatively, it may comprise photoconductive zinc oxide pigment on a paper substrate. The substrate may be coated with a dielectric to retain the charge image. The image being recorded may be viewed from the other side of the panel and it is possible to provide different optical emissions for viewing and recording by the use of luminescent phosphors and different gaseous medium mixtures. The image may consist of numerals, letters, binary words, a television or radar display, or facsimile.
